Violin

Internationally acclaimed violinist Timothy Chooi has mesmerized global audiences with his virtuosity and emotional depth. Chooi's accolades include First Prize at the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition and has graced renowned orchestras and prestigious venues, earning glowing reviews.

Nikki Chooi

Violin

Internationally acclaimed violinist Nikki Chooi, laureate of the Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky Competitions, served as Metropolitan Opera concertmaster and currently leads the Grammy-winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Lluís Claret

Renowned cellist Lluís Claret, laureate of the Casals and Rostropovich Competitions, is celebrated for his international performances and pedagogy. He currently teaches at the New England Conservatory.

Paul Watkins

Cello

Paul Watkins is a worldwide celebrated British cellist and conductor. He served as cellist of the Emerson String Quartet and is Professor at the Yale School of Music.

Christian Kim

Violin

Violinist Christian Kim has performed worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, winning top international prizes. He leads Violin & Viola content at Tonebase and teaches at Münster University of Music.

The tonebase String Intensive Boston is centered around private lessons and masterclasses, designed to refine your technique, artistry, and performance skills. Participants will work closely with renowned tonebase artists and master teachers, receiving personalized guidance while also having the unique opportunity to observe others' lessons, fostering an immersive and collaborative learning environment.

Masterclasses and Clinics with Renowned Artists

Participants have the opportunity to sign up to perform in masterclasses and specialized clinics led by some of the world’s most distinguished musicians. Each session offers a variety of instrument-specific workshops.

This festival provides unparalleled opportunities to grow as a musician through hands-on mentorship, world-class instruction, and a dynamic learning experience at Carriage House Boston.

The One-on-One Lesson Experience

Two Private Lessons Per Session – Each participant receives two personalized private lessons tailored to their artistic and technical growth.
Faculty Selection – Participants can select their preferred faculty for private lessons.
Priority Placement – Participants who enroll with the Premium Pass receive priority in faculty selection and scheduling.

All private lessons follow an open-door policy, allowing participants to observe any session. This immersive approach fosters a collaborative and inspiring learning environment, where musicians can gain valuable insights from different teaching styles, techniques, and interpretations. Watching a variety of lessons helps deepen musical understanding, offering new perspectives on phrasing, technique, and artistry.

The Violin Intensive

Whether you're studying seriously, playing regularly, or returning to your instrument with fresh motivation, this 3-day violin experience offers a chance to grow, refine, and reconnect with your playing. Through masterclasses, technique workshops, and inspiring musical exchange, you'll deepen your skills in a welcoming and high-level environment.

The Cello Intensive

This 3-day cello intensive is designed for dedicated players looking to sharpen their technique, explore musical depth, and recharge their creative energy. With expert-led sessions and a supportive atmosphere, you'll engage in meaningful learning—whether you're preparing for performances or simply passionate about playing at your best.

What does a day at the event look like?

8am -1pm: Lessons and Practice

Mornings are dedicated to private lessons and individual practice, allowing participants to refine their repertoire with guidance from faculty.

‍

1pm - 3pm: Lunch Break

Time to enjoy some of the local restaurants and cafés in the heart of Boston, right in front of the steps of Carriage House Violins!

3pm - 5pm: Spotlight Event (masterclasses, presentations, discussions)

A rotating session featuring masterclasses, faculty presentations, and engaging discussions on interpretation, technique, and performance insights.

5pm - 7pm: Lessons, Practice, and Studio Classes

Additional lessons and practice time, alongside studio classes where participants can share performances and receive feedback in a supportive group setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the level required to participate in the event?

While we don’t hold auditions, and generally encourage players of all levels to engage in high level learning, it is fair to say that players who have a few years of experience playing would benefit most from this event. You don’t need to be a concert soloist, but if you just picked up your instrument a few months ago, most likely it will be difficult for you to benefit.

Again, regardless if you’re devoted music lover, just re-turning or re-discovering your passion and fire for your instrument, or are a seasoned professional, music student, or teacher, this is the event for you.

Do you provide housing?

No we don’t provide housing, but we do have recommendations. Please reach out to events@tonebase.co to speak more about this!

Will my lessons be guaranteed?

Each Active and Premium participant will get 2 per session that they sign up for! While we will try to accommodate each participants faculty choices, premium participants will receive priority when assigning teachers.

Some artists will be with us only a limited amount of dates, so their lessons will fill up quickly.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes - we offer payment plans! Simply chose one from many options directly at checkout.

What happens to my payment if I can no longer attend?

All payments will be fully refunded if participation is cancelled 30 days before the event - no questions asked!
